5 suggestions on how to make the most of your summer

Dear Church Family,
If your family is like mine, then you are officially in summer mode now that the kids have completed the school year. So what do you have planned this summer? Time at the pool? Trips? VBS? Camps? All of that and more? Hopefully you have a fun and restful summer up ahead. But no matter what you have going on, let me offer you a few suggestions to make the most of the next couple months:

Seek the presence of God
I start with this, because this is what God has been teaching me lately. Do I keep God on the shelf until I need him, or do I desire his presence more than anything else? I pray that each of us will experience Psalm 16:11: You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

I love what Pastor Carlos said this week in his talk: "The more you know Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him, the more you worship Him."

Get in the Word of God
This is the best way to seek the presence of God. Find a Bible reading plan or just pick a book of the Bible and start reading. Try sharing a favorite verse(s) with your friends, neighbors, or co-workers this week. Maybe those verses are now Jude 24-25!

Since we usually have a little more time on our hands during the summer, I asked Pastor Vic to give some book recommendations for our next edition of LIFE. Here are 2 books off of that list: On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (The Wingfeather Saga), which is a good book of fiction to read aloud with your kids. A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, by Eugene Peterson, is about how the life of the Christian is one that can't be or shouldn't be rushed through - but enjoyed.

Be a faithful part of our community
Although summer is the perfect time to take a family vacation or even find a few weeks to get away, don't miss the opportunity to be with your faith family. Did you know that this week marks 40 days post Easter? Sunday we will have the opportunity to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus and what it should mean to us and to our world. You can call it an encore Easter message!

And don't forget our Songs of Summer series begins the first Sunday in June. This is my favorite teaching series! The Psalms are beautiful and full of passion and truth. Don't miss it!

And finally, don't miss out on VBS!!
This is a HUGE week in the life of our church where we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of kids. Did you know we have over 400 children registered already?! Praise the Lord and keep praying for more to join in on the fun. Here are 3 ways you can help right now:

  • We need 75 more people to commit to pray for VBS (Text @vbs2017pr to 81010).
  • We need more men to serve as small group leaders.
  • We need nut-free baked goods for volunteer snacks during the week. These may be dropped off in the cafe Sunday-Thursday afternoon.

Praying for you to leverage your summer for the glory of God!
Pastor Joel
